Wedding video expectations.
Movies have always been more interesting and revealing than an album of still photographs. Watching a movie scene, one can get the whole sense of what is going on, you can see the tears turn to smiles, the tenderness of a kiss or the fondness in someone’s eyes
Still photographs are moments in time and if taken at the wrong moment lead to the wrong conclusion. This is why it is so difficult for a still photographer to tell a complete story yet it is so simple for a wedding videographer.
Weddings are a very emotional event, for the bride and groom, the families and all the friends gathered at one place to celebrate the occasion. When the wedding videographer sweeps the camera over the course of the wedding day, nothing is left to wonder about, it is all encompassing.
Because the wedding day is encapsulated in such a package of condensed time it is so easy to relive every moment of the day. Wedding videos are becoming more popular than still photograph albums. The popularity is helped by great advances in motion picture digital technology but even twenty years ago when wedding videos were captured on huge VHS analog cameras and the quality was poor compared to today’s standards, the audiences were just as enthralled as they are today.
So, you can now see how lucky we are today with the advances in digital video that everyone can have a wedding video without great expense. Now, what should the wedding video DVD show us when played. Any bride will want to see how great her dress looks, how her bridesmaids look, not to mention the groom and his merry men as well as the guests with all the laughter and tears..
What is particularly important is the wedding vows, how the very words sound, are they whispered, are there smiles and tears and that wedding kiss. Of course you may only want to see a wedding ceremony, after all that is the main event for a wedding. Just the ceremony really doesn’t paint the whole picture, there’s a lot more brush strokes when you see the bride getting ready at home, the parents buzzing around, the excitement building as the minutes tick by, the cars arriving at the church and the guests streaming in.
Whereas the photo shoot is for the photographer to get a lot of pictures away from the crowd, it’s also a great opportunity for the videographer for the fun bits.
The reception is where a lot of conversation with the newly married couple takes place and is played back on your DVD for you to hear all over again. The speeches are videod and the words can become a surprise when they are heard on the screen some time after the wedding.
Most wedding couples will hardly remember a lot about their wedding day six months after their wedding. This is why it is very important to have a wedding video as compared to a still photo album, as you turn the pages of your photo album you won’t hear the sounds of the wedding day or indeed see the whole day unfold into the complete story of your wedding day.

If you intend to have a wedding video and you don’t know where to start, boot up your computer and enter a phrase such as wedding videograper New York (replace New York with the name of your city) in the Google search bar and up will come lots of results. Please note, not all the better wedding videographers are in the first pages so if you are going to spend in the vicinity of $2000 spend some time looking. Here’s what I suggest you do.
Find the sites that offer a free demo DVD of their weddings and ask each of them to send you a DVD. Find the time to look at these DVDs and make a note about each of these on a pad, otherwise you won’t remember who did what after you’ve watched them. This is how you can narrow down the field to find the video company that will suit you. When companies advertise on TV or the print media, naturally they are going to show you what they think is their best and present it in a manner or mood to persuade you that they are the one for you. I’m sure that you have seen many ads for food such as a lovely looking fresh juicy hamburger, you’ll even see these illuminated colour images above the counter in hamburger shops. Compare the difference of the displayed image to the appearance of the hamburger when you remove it from the paper wrap. We’ve all experienced choosing a product from the supermarket shelves only to find when we open and use it, disappointment sets in.
.
When it comes to demo wedding DVDs don’t be fooled by what you see on the screen. Most of these demos will present what we call in the industry ’slow mode’ or slow motion effects, the events have been slowed down so that they appear to be in another world, dreamily, romanticly drifting into the sunset. The other effect that is used is gentle blurring, softening the detail of the image, like looking through a gauze curtain, or the image has been converted to Black & White. The clips that have been chosen for the demo DVD are also the very best of a spectacular pretty bride where she is doing something out of the ordinary. You can be easily influenced and mesmerised by these demos so be careful and read on how to really judge the videographer you want. Before we move on,
I want to touch on the sound on the demo DVDs. Very, very few will actually have any real sound from the weddings they’re presenting to you. It will be any sort of music overlaid all the way through the video. Well, to be fair about this, if you have slow mode, you certainly can’t have any voices, you mayt have heard recordings of voices played back at slower speeds than real time, they either sound very drunk or asleep. So from looking at a highlight version of a wedding video, you will have no idea of the quality of the sound you may get when the bride whispers “I do” during the wedding ceremony when the vows are exchanged, all you have heard to date is a soundtrack of music.
These days technology has enabled us to record sound using radio microphones and in the wedding video business it is becoming more commonplace for operators to use lapel radio mics attached to a concealed wire which leads to a small transmitter in the groom’s pocket. If the videographer is experienced and particularly those who come from the film and television industry the cameraman will see displayed in his viewfinder the audio levels of the lapel mics and the ambient sound picked up from the camera mic. I have heard some disastrous results produced by videographers who don’t have the expertise and experience, particularly from the “backyarders” as they are called, videographers who have a day job and shoot weddings on weekends. So, there’s another tip when choosing your videographer, ask about his experience and about the sound.
Now all of these demo DVDs will feel like a promo for a movie from Hollywood but they have very little to do with what is to happen on your wedding day. So, what do you do. Well, it’s quite simply a matter of a little more effort and time. Contact the same wedding video companies that supplied you with the demo DVDs and ask them to send you a real wedding highlight version of a wedding similar to your intended coming event. This is where you can narrow down the choice of wedding videographer. The wedding highlight DVDs vary from company to company. Most are only 5 -10 minutes, the best are 20-25 minutes. The reason some are only 5 minutes because less editing time is used and the editor can get through more weddings in a week. In other words, the supplier who is producing a 20-25 minute video DVD is giving you value for the money you spend, he has used a lot more time searching through the hundreds of scenes to give you a balanced complete idea of what your wedding was all about.
There’s also another way to find the right video company, go visit them. It will certainly take time and you may not want to spend the time but don’t forget, the wedding day will only happen once, you can’t do it all again because the videographer let you down, there are no ’second takes’ You won’t regret the time you’ve spent finding a real professional knows ‘his stuff’ when you see the finished result.
It is very important to find the right wedding videographer. Finding wedding video companies or an individual videographer who have film or television experience is a plus.
As the bride does most of the work getting the wedding organised she wants to be to see the results of all her efforts. There has been a lot of money and time spent on the wedding. The still photographs really won’t give you much idea of the emotions of the day. Still photographs are just ‘blinks’ of the events, pasted on pages in an album. To illustrate this point, imagine going to a movie theatre to see a film like “GONE WITH THE WIND” and you are presented with an album of scenes from the movie, no sound, just film stills. How do you get any idea of the emotions of the events and what was said to each other, no, no the video is by far the most important visual vehicle to relive the wedding day, no doubt about that.
There’s another important part of the choosing, you need to see the videographer, You need to see that they are presentable, appropriatly dressed, well mannered and hopefully enthusiastic.Your videographer will be with you all the day and all the night, it’s a lot better working with people you have confidence in and are likeable.
